Is Snoring Normal in Children?
What Parents Should Know

Snoring

Many parents assume snoring is harmless, especially if their child seems otherwise healthy. However, regular snoring in children is often not considered normal and may be a sign of an underlying airway concern.

While occasional snoring can happen during illness or congestion, frequent snoring may indicate restricted airflow during sleep and can affect your child’s overall health and development.

Why do children snore?

Children may snore for many reasons, including:

• Enlarged tonsils or adenoids

• Mouth breathing habits

• Nasal congestion or allergies

• Narrow palate or jaw development concerns

• Airway restriction during sleep

Signs snoring may be more serious

You may want to schedule an evaluation if your child:

• Snores regularly

• Sleeps with an open mouth

• Tosses and turns at night

• Seems tired during the day

• Has difficulty focusing

• Grinds their teeth while sleeping

Why sleep matters for growing children

Healthy sleep is important for growth, focus, mood, and development.

When breathing becomes disrupted during sleep, children may not get the deep, restorative rest they need. In some cases, snoring may be one sign that the airway is working harder than it should.

Early evaluation can help identify concerns before they become larger developmental issues.
